A rare deluge of rainfall left blue lagoons of water amid the palm trees and sand dunes of the Sahara desert, nourishing some of its driest regions with more water than they had seen in decades. In the desert town of Merzouga, located near Rachidia, water gushed through arid lands, filling up ancient lakebeds that had been dry for decades. The storms, which occurred over two days in September, exceeded annual rainfall averages in several areas, with more than 100mm (3.9 inches) recorded in Tagounite, about 450km south of Rabat.
