CF cards are some of the most robust and durable memory cards available. My advice would be to use a CF card in the camera while recording images.

May 7, 2013 · For SD, the controller for reading the card resides in the reader and thus readers cost more but cards cost less (but are limited by the reader). For CF on the other hand, the controller resides in the card. This allows for some interesting things like the old Microdrives that were actual hard drives inside a CF card.

In any case, do as mentioned above and designate the CF card as primary for RAW, and the SD card as secondary for JPEG. Then, hold down the "Qual" button and spin the command wheel until RAW+Basic pops up on the top LCD. You should be good to go from there.

However, if your CF reader is USB, it wouldn't likely be much faster, if at all. Anyways, it can be all over the map and will very much depend on the speed of the reader, the speed of the computer, and the speed of the card. However, a big win on transfering via a reader is that you don't waste your camera battery doing the download.

In the case of SD cards, being sure to use the OS to eject them before removal should be enough. Following those practices, I've never experienced memory card failure, SD or CF, in any of my cameras going back to 2005. I use a 400X 32GB Transcend CF card in my 5DII most of the time and a faster 600X 16GB Transcend CF card in my 7D.
